CBD is like the new kid on the block: everyone is excited about its arrival, but some people have a hard time understanding what it actually is, where it comes from and why it works. So the following list answers the Top 10 questions consumers like you have about CBD.

1. What is the difference between hemp and marijuana?

From a scientific point of view, both plants are derived from the genus cannabis and the species sativa. The distinction between the two is determined by whether a plant contains less than 0.3% THC. Any plant having more than 0.3% THC is considered marijauna according to the federal government.

However, CBD is present in both plants, so legally speaking, a cannabis sativa plant must contain less than 0.3% THC (dry weight) to be considered hemp. Any plant that contains greater than 0.3% THC (dry weight) is considered marijuana, even though it’s not likely you’ll feel any psychoactive effects unless the THC level is at least 5%. This dry weight percentage is a legal designation cited in the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 that removed regulations on hemp, allowing each U.S. state to regulate the legal cultivation, possession, and sale of hemp within its state boundaries. In this Act, Congress also identified hemp as cannabis sativa L., which subsumes any part of the plant with a THC level <0.3% (dry weight). Most states have adopted this legal designation.

These two plants also have different uses and effects. The CBD in hemp is used for its health benefits, the plant’s strong fiber is manufactured into textiles and rope, and hemp seeds are packed with nutritional value. Marijuana also has health benefits and can be used medicinally to relieve symptoms and side effects from certain medical conditions. But THC is the psychoactive component of cannabis that produces a change in mood, thinking, and a relaxed, drowsy “high” feeling. So, marijuana is also cultivated for recreational purposes. 

2. What do CBD and THC stand for?

CBD stands for cannabidiol and is one of more than 113 cannabinoids, which are the active constituents found in the cannabis sativa plant. THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol and is also a cannabinoid. The most well-studied and well-known cannabinoids of the plant, CBD and THC, are two of the plant’s oils that are responsible for producing the effects mentioned above. In other words, the “high” someone feels from ingesting marijuana is received from the cannabinoid THC. Likewise, the anxiety-lessening, pain-relieving benefits received from hemp are from the cannabinoid CBD.

3. Is CBD legal?

President Trump signed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (a.k.a 2018 Farm Bill), which federally legalized CBD derived from hemp and legalized hemp’s industrial cultivation as long as it satisfies all of the following criteria: it is grown by a licensed grower who complies with federal and state regulations. So, while under these criteria, it is legal to grow hemp in any of the 50 states; however, purchasing or possessing CBD derived from hemp is not legal in all 50 states. This means that while you can order hemp-derived CBD products online, if you live in a state that hasn’t legalized possession, you are breaking the law. Some states, including Virginia, Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota, have certain restrictions on the legal status of CBD products.

Similarly, if you purchase CBD products legally and then drive to a state where they are illegal, you are subject to that state’s laws. The same is true if you fly. TSA allows you to fly with CBD products in your checked or carry-on luggage. Of course, laws for travel follow those of the TSA: No more than three 0.4 oz. containers of liquid are allowed, and they must be placed in a plastic, resealable bag in your carry-on luggage. 

4. How does ALL G extract CBD for its products?

There are several methods of procuring CBD from the cannabis plant, but ALL G uses CO2 extraction–the high-efficiency, gold-standard. This process is widely accepted as the most advanced CBD extraction method because it safely produces a quality product that is pure and clean and leaves behind no trapped toxins in the oil.

Here’s how it works: first, the CO2 extraction removes oils and resins from the plant, then a purification process removes excess plant material and waxes. Lipids are separated, the remaining chlorophyll is removed, and the end product is a pure, flavorless, odorless CBD powder that is safe for ingestion in a variety of applications and free from natural fungi, molds, mildew, and heavy metals.

5. What is the differences between full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate, and which does ALL G sell?

Full-spectrum products

These products contain all of the plant’s phytochemicals, including CBD, trace cannabinoids, terpenes, essential oils, and trifle amounts of THC i.e., < 0.3%. Referred to as the entourage effect, this union of extracted compounds work together to intensify the health benefits provided by each individual phytochemical.

However, despite not being able to achieve a “high” from full-spectrum CBD products, it is possible for you to receive a positive drug test if you use full-spectrum CBD products regularly and often.

Broad-spectrum products

Similar to full-spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD contains all the plant’s phytochemicals, except for THC, which is removed during extraction. ALL G’s products are broad-spectrum, and like full-spectrum, broad-spectrum also produces the entourage effect, minus the THC. So, broad spectrum is like full-spectrum, just without the THC.

CBD isolate

This process involves preserving only one cannabinoid, the CBD. All other phytochemicals are extracted and eliminated from the end product, so you receive 99% CBD. One gram of isolate powder includes 990 mg of CBD; however, the entourage effect is not induced when using this form. A study done in 2015 by Ruth Gallily and associates compared the efficacy of isolated pure CBD with full spectrum CBD oil that contained 1% THC. Findings suggested administration of isolated, single-molecule CBD resulted in a bell-shaped dose-response curve, meaning that when the amount of CBD exceeded a certain point, its therapeutic impact declined dramatically. Healing was only observed when CBD was given within a very limited dose range, whereas no beneficial effect was achieved at either lower or higher doses. In stark contrast when patients were given a full spectrum product which included CBD at 17% and THC at 1%  increasing relief of symptoms was found upon increasing the dose given to the patient which makes full product ideal for clinical therapeutic uses. 

This is essentially backing the theory of the Entourage effect and thus showing that broad spectrum and full spectrum products are superior to isolates. ALL G’s product is broad spectrum and is as close to a full spectrum product as you can get without having THC in the ingredients.

6. Can you get high from CBD products?

The hemp plant is non-psychoactive, which means that CBD derived from the hemp plant is non-psychoactive and cannot produce a “high.” While CBD encourages the mind and body to relax and reduces stress, anxiety, and pain, these effects are not the same as feeling “high.” As mentioned above, the THC found in the hemp plant does not exceed 0.3%, which is not enough to induce psychoactivity. You could smoke hemp until your lungs gave out (<0.3% THC dry weight) and never experience a high.

7. Will I fail a drug test if I use CBD products?

If you’re using CBD products, you shouldn’t test positive for THC, right? Right. But you have to make sure you know what you’re purchasing. As mentioned above, full-spectrum products contain low amounts of THC, and when used often enough, can show up on a drug test. Broad spectrum and CBD isolate do not contain THC, so no THC should be detected in a drug test.  Look for CBD products labeled “zero THC.” However, make sure to purchase properly tested products which include certificates of analysis from a third party lab. Also make sure you are buying labeled CBD products from a reputable company, so you can be certain of ingredient components and the amount of those ingredients in the products you purchase.

8. How do I know if I’m buying CBD from a reputable company?

Because CBD products aren’t regulated by the FDA, their composition and accuracy goes unchecked by an overseeing authority. That is, unless the seller offers a Certificate of Analysis by an independent, third-party lab that completes a report detailing the product’s batch number, testing date, potency, etc.

If the seller doesn’t offer a Certificate of Analysis, the onus is on the customer to read the seller’s product information and labels to know what’s in the product and decide if it’s really what it says it is. In any case, it’s a good idea to visit the company’s website to look for terminology, like the following, which will establish the company as reputable and transparent: 

• Organic
• Non-GMO
• CO2-extracted
• 100% U.S. Federal Farm Bill Compliant hemp
• Free from residual solvents, heavy metals, and/or pesticides
• Independent laboratory tested
• Certificate of Analysis  (COA) provided
